El renacimiento de Rotorua: por qué 2025 es el año para volver

Rotorua has long been one of New Zealand's signature stops — a place where Māori culture, geothermal drama and lakeside hospitality converge in a way no other destination quite manages. After a few quieter post-pandemic seasons, the city is enjoying a genuine renaissance, and 2025 is shaping up to be the year to bring groups back.
At Te Puia, the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute has completed significant upgrades to its visitor centre and reinstated extended evening cultural performances. The Pōhutu Geyser remains as reliable as ever, erupting up to 20 times a day to heights of 30 metres, and the new viewing platforms make it far easier for larger groups to enjoy the spectacle simultaneously.
Whakarewarewa, the Living Māori Village, has reopened its full network of geothermal boardwalks following a multi-year refurbishment. The village experience — where local families still cook in steam boxes and bathe in mineral pools — is one of the most authentic cultural encounters in New Zealand, and the new infrastructure makes it accessible for groups of all mobility levels.
Beyond the geothermal core, Wai-O-Tapu's Champagne Pool and Artist's Palette continue to dazzle, while the redeveloped Government Gardens precinct now offers a beautifully restored backdrop for welcome dinners and group photos. The Polynesian Spa has also expanded its private group bathing options — a wonderful way to unwind after a long touring day.
For mobility and logistics, Rotorua remains hard to beat: a compact city centre, strong coach access, a wide range of 4-star and boutique accommodation, and an airport with good domestic connections. Pair it with two nights and a day excursion to Hobbiton in nearby Matamata and you have the makings of one of the strongest mid-itinerary segments anywhere in the country.
If you've not refreshed your Rotorua programme in the last few years, now is the moment. We'd be delighted to put together an updated proposal showcasing the very best the region has to offer in 2025 and beyond.
