    Akaroa & Banks Peninsula

A French-flavoured village inside an ancient volcanic harbour, home to the rare Hector's dolphin.

    About Akaroa & Banks Peninsula

Akaroa is the only town in New Zealand founded by the French — settled in 1840 just weeks after the British signed the Treaty of Waitangi. Streets still carry French names, and bakeries still turn out croissants beside the harbour.

The town sits inside an ancient volcanic caldera that has flooded to form one of the South Island's most beautiful natural harbours — and the only place in the world to see the tiny, endangered Hector's dolphin.
