Kata Tjuṯa (The Olgas)
36 ancient domed rock formations, equally sacred and spectacular as Uluru itself.
About Kata Tjuṯa (The Olgas)
50km west of Uluru lie 36 ancient domed rock formations known as Kata Tjuṯa — 'many heads' in the local Anangu language. They are equally sacred and, many travellers feel, even more spectacular than Uluru itself.
The tallest dome, Mount Olga, stands 546m tall — almost 200m higher than Uluru. Two main walks let you experience the formations up close: the easy Walpa Gorge walk, and the more challenging Valley of the Winds.
While You're There
What to See & Do
- 36 enormous red rock domes
- Walpa Gorge (Walpa = 'windy' — easy 1-hour return walk)
- Valley of the Winds — 7.4km loop with two viewpoints
- Sunrise viewing area (often quieter than Uluru's)
- Dramatic afternoon light on the domes
