Taupō-See
New Zealand's largest lake (the caldera of a super-volcano) — Huka Falls, fishing, sailing and the Tongariro Crossing nearby.
About Lake Taupō
Lake Taupō is the caldera of one of the world's most powerful supervolcanoes — and at 616 km², it is also New Zealand's largest lake. The eruption that formed it 26,500 years ago was so violent it darkened skies in China.
Today it is one of the country's most loved holiday playgrounds, with crystal-clear water, world-famous trout fishing, and the dramatic Tongariro National Park (NZ's oldest, and a dual UNESCO site) on its southern shore.
